Challenger (5 - 16 year olds) 

The Little League Challenger Program is Little League’s adaptive baseball program for individuals with physical and intellectual challenges. Any individual with a physical or intellectual challenge may participate. The Challenger Division accommodates players ages 4-18, or up to age 22 if still enrolled in school. The Senior League Challenger Division accommodates players ages 15 and above (no maximum age).  MLL has over 800 Challenger participants for the combined fall and spring baseball seasons. 

Each year, Mechanicsville Little League contributes a monetary donation, as well as donates MLL’s Opening Day activities, to the Challenger Divisions.  Opening Day activities such as silent auction of baskets prepared by MLL teams in the younger divisions and  baked good sale (goods prepared/donated from MLL teams in the older divisions) assist in the funding of the Challenger Division.  The Challenger Division may also receive direct sponsorships from local businesses.

Funds raised to support the Challenger Division cover all, but are not limited to, the following:

• Reduced/waived registrations
• Uniforms
• Coordination, travel accommodations and participation in the Norfolk Jamboree.  There are 11 Jamborees across the U.S. and MLL has been attending this special event for over 20 years.

The Jamboree is “an event for special needs children similar to the Little League World Series but in a non-competitive environment. The event gives boys, girls, and adults with disabilities the opportunity to play baseball and socialize in a positive atmosphere…”

All Challenger expenses are covered through fundraising, sponsorships and MLL funds.  Challenger families do not have any out of pocket expenses.
